I am overweight at this stage of my life and I am thinking about going through with a liposuction. I did some reading about this and thought I'd share my findings in a web page. Please don't take my page here as an authoritative source – it's basically my own thoughts as I try to make up my mind here.
I had liposuction in mind for my tummy. My weight is concentrated there and no matter how much I try to lose it, it stays there. I want to get rid of it, it is that simple. I know that liposuction isn't limited to the belly. It can be done in various parts of the body, but I am pretty focused on my tummy at this point in time. It's possible that if I see good results, I may want to move on to doing my upper arms as well. We'll have to see about that.
I am scared of any kind of plastic surgery, so not sure I want to go ahead with it. My aunt had a bad experience just with this kind of procedure some 20 years ago. I know that techniques have changed since then, and are much safer today. My aunt had it done in what is known as the "Dry technique". That means that the metal tube thing (eewwww…) was simply inserted into the layer of fat between the skin and the muscle and her fatty tissue was rather brutally sucked out. That's my reading of it anyway. She suffered from a major blood loss and took a long while to recover. Definitely not something I would like to go through myself… all that pain, suffering and plain risk for getting a better silhouette… well, I don’t think it's worth it. My aunt is supportive of me going through this procedure nowdays, but she admits that had she known back then how bad it's going to be, she would have skipped it.
Fortunately, that technique is no longer user. Today, they're using something called Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction or UAL or Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL). That is in essence a wet technique where a large amount of fluid is inserted into the fatty tissue. Then the tube that they're using had either ultra sound device built in or some electric thingie that uses compressed air. I'm sorry if I'm not using the right technical terms, it's just what I've read, translated into my own words.
Here's an interesting article about liposuction that tells you more about it. The author says that it's a lot like an inner body vacuum cleaner. I confess, this does not make it sound very appealing to me. The thought of someone vacuuming away my body tissues and depositing them into a glass jar is not something I like to go to bed with. However, I don't like my current figure either… so… a dilemma.
I will mention here that I have never had plastic surgery before in my life. I have thought about going with a few other procedures, like a nose job at one point and also taking care of my spider veins, but nothing bugged me as bad as my tummy fat nowadays.
I'll end with a few resources that I have found helpful –
